A BRIEF HISTORY OF CRITCHFIELD CHRISTIAN
AND MISSIONARY ALLIANCE CHURCH:
This church story begins on February 24,1946 and March 23,1948 with the
Rev. Ernest Bauman and Rev. Daniel Breegle, respectively. Sound strange?
Today, the Critchfield C&MA Church includes the former Rogers Mill
C&MA Church. Rev. and Mrs. Bauman started the Critchfield Church in the Clay Run School House.
The first service was held on the date mentioned above.
Within 3 years, the congregation began work on the present church building.
Materials for the building were gleaned from the property and surrounding area. A portable sawmill on
the property turned tulip poplars into benches which were meant to be “sleep-proof”.
In fact, an additional piece was added later to make them a little more comfortable.
Though it took several years to complete (which included it falling down at least once in construction
and an injury too from Rev. Bauman), on January 30,1955 the pulpit furniture was dedicated.
The Roger Mill Church was begun by Rev. Breegle in William Gesekey’s barn in Rogers Mill. Later,
property was donated by Ralph and Mary Ritenour and the church was constructed.
On March 3, 1957, Rev. D.C. Koop, the District Superintendent led the dedication of the fully paid church building.
Throughout the years, these churches worked together to serve their respective communities for the cause of Christ.
In 1969, they had their first combined Daily Vacation Bible School. Shortly thereafter, they merged into one church.
Another C&MA Church shares its history with the Critchfield Church. This is the Scullton Alliance Church
which is still in existence. For a number of years Critchfield and Scullton
were a combined charge which meant they share a pastor.
